"Corporal punishment has negative effects on mental health and part of the reason is because corporal punishment tends to go alongside experiences of child abuse and neglect," he said. Higgins said they found 61 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds experienced corporal punishment as children four or more times.Lead researcher Professor Daryl Higgins said six in ten children have been smacked repeatedly by their parents."It's really important to take into account the broader environment that children grow up in," Higgins said.

The study also found girls who had experienced corporal punishment at least four times were 1.8 times more likely to have a major depressive disorder later in their lifetime, and 2.1 times as likely to experience anxiety."If you want to reduce population-level anxiety for women and men, don't hit them as children," Higgins said.

"There is a very real connection between corporal punishment and current and lifelong experience of mental ill-health."

A biased and politically motivated study is more like it. Absolute bullshit.

Lot of bullshit!! Someone should smack some sense into these journos!!

Bullshit

Sounds like some agenda pushing going on here

Yeah but locking them in for 2 years has no affect on them

How is it that there are way more mentally challenged young people now than 40 years ago then...I smell bullshit

Wonder since which generation did kids were born with discipline programmed, and ‘don’t trouble parents’ software instilled.

MORE! Track discipline and respect🙏

Study I did 6 out of 10 kids spoiled rotten and they deserve a smack It’s better your parents do it when you’re younger to learn some respect than someone on the streets beats them half to death because there a dick with no discipline then go crying why me

Sorry if you are going to include abuse in the home within the study the data is skewed. Ch 9 need to provide links to the peer reviewed paper otherwise it’s just click bait.

Bull shit

My siblings and I were disciplined with a belt by my mother who was disciplined the same way. My father was ignored as a child and he mostly ignored us. It was not uncommon in the sixties. We all learned from that and are very close to our kids and our mental health is fine.

Children who aren’t smacked nearly twice as likely to end up on prison.

I was beaten as a kid. I resent my father for it. There is a difference between hitting and smacking and a parent installing discipline and respect into a situation as a LAST RESORT! I agree with the argument society is soft and disrespectful these days at the lack of discipline

My kids were smacked very rarely, never in anger, but were loved and spoiled more All my kids have suffered depression/anxiety to a small degree, I blame phones/Social media/loneliness. The modern World is connected, and yet emotionally/physically isolating with no human contact

So it’s called teaching them it’s been going on for centuries

I'm conflicted. I always thought modern journalists should have been flogged more as children. However, believing this headline would suggest they were.

Because it’s the smacked boomers who are the softies who need safe spaces, trigger warning, censored speech and have identity issues so prevalent they can’t even define what a woman is…..riiiiiiight

I think mental health effects kids these days a lot more than what I can remember as a kid. Nothing to do with parents disciplining them. Perhaps kids have it too easy these days, making them mentally fragile. 🤷‍♂️The world has gone too sensitive.

Who paid for this research and why?

Smacking, people see this in different lights. One would give a little smack, another would BEAT, that's the problem. My brother worked for a large hospital, a parent of a beaten child would say 'he/she drove me to it' thinks it's a good excuse, never hit a child.

BULLSHIT. It depends on the child/parent relationship in the first place. How many times you smack them & whether it was a fair enough reason to spank in the first place which should only happen as a last resort when all else fails.

Bring back the cane in schools too. Bout time respect gets taught again old school.

There is smacking which many of us encountered & learned from. Then there is abuse you are talking about that don't link the two.

Bullshit...

What sort of shit is this. If you don’t teach them at right time they become ignorant to parents. Parents have every right to control kids when need to be. Stop making the science robotic

Too much encroachment of privacy by news channels and activists. Issue a guideline and stick to that, stop lurking in houses.

we are all a little crazy! so what's the big fuss?!?

Bullshit, I did get plenty (79 years old), at home and in school. Did me a lot of good.
