Roughly 2.5 per cent reported chewing and spitting four to seven times in the previous 28 days, and 2.1 per cent did so at least twice a week , found the first study to document the prevalence of the behaviour in Australian adolescents by researchers at the University of Sydney, Western Sydney University and Macquarie University.
“This is definitely cause for concern,” Dr Aouad said. “The association with psychological distress in itself warrants clinicians to take this behaviour very seriously and we need to offer help to anyone who admits to struggling with chewing and eating." The strong association with psychological issues and eating disorder traits meant it was unlikely these were cases of adolescents simply spitting out food because they didn't like the taste.
"It's common enough that we should be asking our [eating disorder] patients about chewing and spitting" among an array of abnormal eating behaviours including bingeing, purging, laxative use and restrictive eating.
