| Liz Cheney, a fierce critic of Donald Trump, was defeated on Tuesday night in her bid for re-election by a rival backed by the former president, a result that strengthens his status as kingmaker among conservative voters.
“Our work is far from over. Now, the real work begins. The great and original champion of our party, Abraham Lincoln, was defeated in elections for the Senate and the House before he won the most important election of all,” she told a group of supporters that included her father, George Bush’s vice president, on Tuesday night .
Of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Mr Trump, four have decided against seeking another term in Congress and only two have won their primaries this year.Mr Trump issued a statement on his social media site congratulating Ms Hageman, who has also claimed the 2020 election was rigged. The former president suggested Tuesday’s result was a “complete rebuke” of the January 6 committee, and lashed out at Ms Cheney.
In the lead-up to Tuesday’s vote, Ms Cheney made attempts to woo over Democrat supporters by invoking former president John Kennedy in a fundraising email, and encouraging Democrat voters to change party affiliation to participate in the Republican primary. Ms Cheney’s concession speech was watched closely by political analysts for a signal she might contest the 2024 Republican presidential nomination against a likely Mr Trump.
“There is nothing more important she will ever do than lead the effort to make sure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office. And she will succeed,” he said.
