The man accused of killing his fiancee’s nine-year-old daughter, Charlise Mutten, told police his partner had been planning on “doing a runner” with her daughter and made him lie about her whereabouts, a jury has heard.
Charlise, who lived with her grandparents in Tweed Heads, had been visiting Stein and her mother during the school holidays. Stein has pleaded not guilty to Charlise’s murder. The one-hour interview was played at his NSW Supreme Court trial on Friday. The court heard, after his first interview, Stein approached police because “certain aspects were missing” from that version of events.Prosecutors allege Stein dumped Charlise’s body in a sand-filled barrel by the Colo River in the early hours of January 14. The body, which had two gunshot wounds, was found on January 18.
