Chanticleer podcast: Joe Aston subs in as Qantas nosedives, Star pays through the nose, Myer’s new makeover

This week, Anthony and special guest Joe Aston get advice on negotiating pay from Star Entertainment’s new recruit, look at Qantas’ latest fall from grace and go shopping with Solomon Lew at Myer.Joe, so, let’s just quickly go to something I reckon would have caught your eye this week, bombed-out Star Entertainment, which owns casinos in Sydney, the Gold Coast and Brisbane. It’s hired a new CEO, a bloke called Steve McCann, who used to run Lendlease.

Obviously, Robbie Cooke, his predecessor, will wish that he’d negotiated that but even better than that is that his bonuses vest even if the company goes insolvent. It also makes a mockery of Vanessa Hudson saying last year, repeatedly that the customer experience was back to where it was pre-COVID. And that’s just clearly not what the customers believe. And that’s not their experience.

I then went and actually worked at Etihad, after that, and I remember the effort that went into lobbying the Skytrax people was astounding. But you go in there now and order the lamb noodles, you’d need a magnifying glass to find any lamb in there. They’ve just degraded the experience relentlessly.Joe, let’s take a look at the plans to remake department store Myer. Myer’s also got a new brigade, executive chair Olivia Wirth who’s ex-Qantas and wily corporate raider, Gary Weiss. They were installed as chair and deputy chair three months ago.

Myer has 50 or so department stores, mostly sells other people’s brands, this would hugely increase its footprint and increase the selling of its own products. And that’s sort of what Premier specialises in.
