Chanel makes some of the world’s most desirable fragrances. Olivier Polge brings them to life.

Already a subscriber?Walking into the Chanel fragrance HQ in the uber-chic district of Neuilly on the western edge of Paris is like stepping onto the set of Gattaca. The prevailing palette is an icy white, offset by an arctic blue; staff are poised and picturesque, improbably polite. The whole place speaks of precision, perfection and what could be described as an otherworldly, elevated elegance.resembles a Gallic Ethan Hawke, minus the tremulous uncertainty.

Key to all Chanel fragrances is complexity. Chanel No. 5, released in 1921, was revolutionary in that it was an abstract scent as opposed to perfumes of the day that were driven by the essence of a particular flower. Also revolutionary was that Gabrielle Chanel named it after herself, the first couturier to do so. Polge says Chanel No. 5 is incomparable to any other fragrance.

His father, Jacques, was head perfumer of Chanel from 1978 to 2015 and responsible for iconic fragrances including Antaeus , Coco and, most illustriously, Egoiste. Allure, Allure Homme and Coco Mademoiselle followed. Olivier is only the fourth nose in Chanel’s 114-year history.
