CFMEU National Secretary Zach Smith said he would move to strengthen the party’s national platform to support ending the $600 million industry.

The construction union will push Labor to ban the manufacture, use and import of all engineered stone at its national conference in Brisbane this week, claiming its continued use would “tacitly endorse killing workers”.

While the focus of recent campaigns has been on claims that businesses do not care about their workers, Ms Lukas said given the business was her, her husband and their son, they were very aware of safety. Suppliers are pushing for the continued use of engineered stone with low levels of silica, either below 40 per cent or below 10 per cent, while the building industry supports a ban on slabs with more than 40 per cent.
