Legal protections to keep women safe need to be tightened and offenders detained, according to the heartbroken mother of a young woman murdered by her stalker. In November 2020, Celeste Manno was murdered as she slept in her family home in the Melbourne suburb of Mernda, just days shy of her 24th birthday. Manno’s ex-colleague Luay Nader Sako, was sentenced to 36 years’ prison with a non-parole period of 30 years earlier this year for killing the 23-year-old after stalking her.
“When women are attending police stations, and they are fearing for their life, we need to absolutely detain these people , regardless of the circumstances,” Di Mauro said. “They are approaching a police station for a reason. “We cannot continue and send them home and have people released on bail — simple as that.” Di Mauro has launched a petition calling for more stringent stalking laws, and mandatory life sentences for murder, following her daughter’s murder.
