Analysis: With bitter-sweet score, Alex Carey opens a window for Australia | GregBaum

In a series so far manacled by two slow pitches, Alex Carey played the most enterprising innings yet. He deserved a century, but in sport, you are more likely to get what comes than what is merited. For Carey, it was a bitter-sweet score of 93.

In the end, Carey played too well for his own good. On a day when runs again were eked out at less than three an over, a century had not seemed remotely possible until Carey’s sudden spurt and Pakistan’s fatigue in the field re-set the abacus. With fewer than four overs remaining, and aware that Australia might not want to bat into Monday – and should not – Carey swept again at probably the most innocuous ball he faced and it skidded into his stumps.

This thinking could explain a seventh successive day of this international staring match between Australia and Pakistan. Slow pitches make it hard to take wickets, but they also make for stodgy scoring. Were Australia too conservative by not declaring sooner? Commentators barrack for declarations because it gives them something to talk about. But sometimes, the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Even an Asian elephant, which is smaller than the African.
