Allowing just 20 people at a time in the Domed Reading Room and having to register online before visiting are among strict rules being considered for when the library does re-open.

The State Library of Victoria needs more time to prepare its emergence from COVID-19 lockdown and will not re-open on June 1, its CEO Kate Torney says.

There will be more frequent cleaning of public surfaces and the 24 hour quarantining of books after users return them —Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that libraries can re-open from June 1, with no more than 20 people in a single area, plus those needed to operate the space.

This was because staff had been planning for a July 1 re-opening, which might now be brought forward. Ms Torney said staff were taking a ‘‘careful and cautious approach’’ and working with the government and institutions such as Melbourne Museum on how and when to bring staff and the public back safely.

Before COVID-19 anyone could walk through the building at any time but in order to track any outbreak, the library might have to take visitors’ contact details.Get our Coronavirus Update newsletter for the day's crucial developments at a glance, the numbers you need to know and what our readers are saying. When China sneezes, does Victoria have immunity? In 2018, Daniels Andrews signed an agreement with China on the Belt and Road Initiative. What is the point of the 'special relationship' if Victoria is treated just like every other state when China is cross? asks Jon Faine. | OPINION Wise move by Daniels. It was always a one way special relationship for China. A back door way to get their greedy tentacles into the Australian economy with dodgy debt repayment agreements. They’ll own half the state soon like they do to African and Pacific Island countries. It wasn’t Dan that trashed our relationship with China. Get the news right please.
