Cards are stacked: Why the government won’t boot Star from Queensland

Like other noxious weeds set loose upon the public under the ostensible promise of good, Australia’s biggest casino operators have cast their spores so far and sent their roots so deep there is no genuine prospect of eradication.

A sensible person might conclude this to be a natural and just end to Star’s reign in Queensland, given theBut more so than the other states whose casino inquiries into similar allegations turned up similar findings, the casino-government relationship in Queensland is unyieldingly symbiotic. It is unlikely the Queensland government could afford, politically and financially, to punt Star from the state.Since the Palaszczuk government chose Star as the lead partner in 2015, it has used every opportunity and incremental sod turning to spruik the project’s job-creating and economy-driving plans.

A leading gambling researcher from Monash University, Dr Charles Livingstone, believed taxpayers would need to stump up billions of dollars to Star in compensation if the government was to follow through on the ultimate threat. There would be no shortage of potential candidates from overseas, Livingstone said, particularly from the US and Singapore, but it would be unlikely to get that far.
