A car has exploded on a busy road in inner-suburban Parkville, sending black plumes of smoke into the air and leaving paramedics with at least one patient.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene at Flemington Road, near the Royal Women’s Hospital, about 10.10am on Friday. Emergency services were still assessing the situation, and it was not known whether there were people in the car when it exploded.As of about 11am, police were yet to release any information about the incident.
The Department of Transport said Flemington Road at Parkville was closed in both directions between Harker Street and Grattan Street because of an emergency incident. “Police are directing traffic. Drivers should use Royal Parade, Curzon Street or Swanston Street as alternatives, allowing extra time through the area,” it said in a statement.There were also disruptions to route 58 and 59 trams along Flemington Road.
