Canberra Liberals double ACT Labor's promise of new police officers

The Canberra Liberals say they will more than double the number of new police officers set to enter the service in Canberra over the next few years, as debate over crime and policing intensifies ahead of next month's election. The Canberra Liberals will hire 130 new police if elected — 70 more than Labor have promisedACT Policing says perceptions of a low police presence are due to new crime fighting tacticscoincided with the local community calling for a greater police presence in the area.

Today, the Canberra Liberals announced they would hire 130 new officers across the city should they win office after the election on October 17. "Canberra has the lowest policing numbers per head in the country by a significant margin," Opposition police spokeswoman Giulia Jones said."We must catch-up; we don't want anyone to be worried or panicked in the ACT."

Ms Jones said the plan would cost $55 million, and while the commitment was to roll the officers out over four years in office, she said most would be delivered in the first two."Police now clock on and are running from job, to job, to job and it makes it harder for them to get into the background of issues."

Ugh, the Canberra Liberals are the most unoriginal group I've seen. Labor says they will plants trees, liberals say they will plant more. Labor says they'll hire cops, liberals say they will hire more.

It's simply not a question of more numbers! What is required is a much higher standard of recruitment education and psychological levels. The community do not want militarised goons ignorant of the law, just officers who know and can enforce the law.
