Having an extremely premature baby isn't an experience Canberra mother Katherine Musgrove would wish on anyone, but she says a management checklist for babies born extremely preterm made a bad situation much more manageable.

A management checklist for very premature babies at the Canberra Hospital has helped see the mortality rate for extremely preterm babies reduced by 16 per cent sinceits 2016 introduction.

"When she was born, she actually cried, which we didn't know she would do because she was so little," Ms Musgrove said."They took her away and started running through a checklist."That checklist is the work of Dr Tejavsi Chaudhari, the deputy director of neonatology at Canberra Hospital and a self-confessed checklist fanatic."It's such a simple tool that we know is easy to use and can improve outcomes.

Since the ePREM checklist was implemented at the Canberra Hospital in 2016, the mortality rate for extremely pre-term babies has reduced by 16 per cent. "The checklist highlights the importance of communication, teamwork and making sure people's roles are clearly identified."In an unexpected twist, neonatologist Dr Putri Marsubrin at Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta – a busy referral hospital in Indonesia – discovered the checklist online, and the hospital's neonatal team started using it soon after.

Dr Marsubrin was so pleased with the positive results, she emailed the chief executive of Canberra Health Services, David Peffer."It feels good to know what we do over here – something as simple as this – can have an impact on babies globally," he said.
