.Barnaby_Joyce could return as deputy prime minister and is ‘still a leader’ in the Nationals party room, a staunch ally says. auspol

Mr Joyce has endured a prickly relationship with his successor Michael McCormack since resigning as leader three years ago, including a failed leadership challenge last year.

Nationals senator Matt Canavan has told Sky News although he “couldn’t speak for Barnaby”, he left the door open for him to return to the leadership. “I think at some point he could be leader again. He still is a leader in terms of the political debate. Look, you never say never in politics,” he said.

Mr Joyce resigned as leader in 2018, saying the move was necessary to “clear the air” after revelations of his affair with a staffer and an allegation of sexual harassment. Canavan defends Upper Hunter coal industry against anti-coal poll outcome | Sky News AustraliaNationals Senator Matt Canavan has questioned why political parties are “desperate” to preselect a mining candidate if coal is so unpopular in the Upper Hunter region – as was indicated in an Australia Institute poll. \n \nHis comments came in response to a new poll released by the Australia Institute which revealed 57.4 per cent of voters in the Upper Hunter support Malcolm Turnbull’s call for a moratorium on new coal mine approvals.\n\nMr Canavan said polls which come from organisations with a “particular bent” need to be taken with a “grain of salt”.\n\n“If that position was so popular in the Upper Hunter why is it the case that almost every political party is being desperate to preselect a coal miner to run in this region in recent elections,” he told Sky News.\n\n“The facts are that people know on the ground in the Upper Hunter that their wages are higher thanks to the coal industry, that business gets people through the door thanks to the coal industry.”\n\nMr Canavan pointed out small business in the region also benefit from the mining industry which provides a much larger customer base than they would otherwise enjoy.\n\n“We know that a functioning economy … require industries that actually put something on the table for our nation and the coal industry does that in spades”.\n\n“We often get derided and ridiculed … for taking these positions but we don’t care because we know it’s the truth, we know it’s right and that’s what we stand for.” \n

Canavan calling for pause to AstraZeneva rollout | Sky News AustraliaNationals Senator Matt Canavan is calling for Australia to pause its rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine after multiple European countries suspended the jab over health concerns - stressing they had to ensure 'the cure is not worse than the disease.'\n\nGermany, France and Italy have joined an increasing number of countries halting their vaccine rollouts to investigate a series of incidents involving blood clots. \n\n“I don’t see how we could continue when basically the whole of Europe is worried about this particular vaccine … I don’t think all the capitals of Europe have been overtaken by anti-vaccine zealots, there’s obviously legitimate concerns here,” Mr Canavan said.\n\n“Given that we’re a country where there is not really an imminent threat of coronavirus, I just don’t see how the risk of the vaccine … is better than suspending right now and seeing what evidence comes out from Europe. \n\nSpeaking to Sky News today, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said there would be no plans to stop the rollout, with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian also pointing to health advice which touted the safety of the jab. \n\n“I think the health advice from Europe is not irrelevant to our own country, I’ve got great respect for our own health authorities but I don’t think they’re infallible,” Mr Canavan responded. \n\n“So I just don’t think we can close our eyes to this evidence and I’m worried that we are encouraging a culture of suppression of any concerns about vaccines. \n\n“We shouldn’t suppress legitimate issues and legitimate concerns and clearly there are legitimate concerns and issues given the decisions that have been made by almost every European country. \n\n“If there are serious health risks or outcomes from the treatment, we’ve got to make sure the cure is not worse than the disease.” \n\n In other news the TGA is calling for an end to coal mining! You can't suspend something that's never really started. Queenslands vaccine has been sitting in a fridge for a month. So he should.. This video is a warning from Geert Vanden Bossche.. This man is the Yoda of vax. This is his warning
