Whether they’re looking for a healthier work-life balance, better house deals, to be part of a vibrant community or just closer to nature, thousands of Australians are leaving our major cities for country and coastal towns.

And it’s not just retirees and baby boomers taking the plunge. Researchers at CoreLogic Australia found that nearly 80 per cent of people relocating from cities to regional areas since the mid-2000s have been under 50.

I’m starting to see Canberra, rather than Sydney, as my new hub for music, art and theatre and as I do, I find so much variety before me. I hope the boys will be just as comfortable within big cities as they are in a small country town.”Shonagh Walker can’t imagine moving back to Sydney from Moss Vale in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Being surrounded by animals is a privilege and I’ve adopted four rescue dogs. Through them, I’ve made some of the best friends I have ever known. I can’t say everything has been smooth sailing. Seeing a loved one dying with dementia is one of the hardest things a family can go through, and being away from friends was so hard in the beginning.

Less stress, less commute and having empty beaches and lush rainforest at my doorstep are the big pluses for me.
