ANALYSIS: Can David Pocock upend history by winning an ACT Senate seat?

But does Mr Pocock actually have a chance of disrupting the major parties' 47-year duopoly of ACT Senate seats? The ACT and the Northern Territory gained Senate representation in 1975,Labor has never needed to rely on other parties or candidates' preferences to reach the "quota" required for election: one third of all votes plus one vote .

But the Liberals have never come close to losing a Senate seat in the ACT, despite facing high-profile opposition on various occasions. His main rival for the second Senate seat, the Greens' Penny Kyburz, polled relatively strongly at 17.7 per cent.

Why the ACT and NT only have two senators each while the states get 12While Australian states get 12 senators each, the territories — ACT and NT — only have two senators each to represent their populations. Here's why. And that’s 2 too many and by the way 12 too many for the other lot Why categorise NT and ACT as territories in the first place? Mark them all as Australian States. I feel a lot of State bordered subdivisions need to be applied sometime in the future also. WA is one-third of the entire country? Why does Tasmania have as many senators as NSW and Victoria despite its population being 1/16th and 1/13th their size respectively. It’s a ridiculous gerrymander worse even than the electoral college in the US.

Julia Gillard makes rare appearance to back Katy Gallagher as Labor fears David Pocock upsetLabor strategists are concerned that former Wallaby, who is running as an independent in the ACT, could split the progressive vote ‘… Andrew Barr [said] he would be putting [Labor] No 1 … and Pocock at No 2 because it would be “great” if the 2 territory senators would back territory rights in the federal parliament.’ Will he give Canberra its own police force, displacing the (allegedly) corrupt AFP? JuliaGillard was rejected by many of the very Labor politicians now in opposition. Her misogynist speech was simply to deflect her support of the then grub speaker Peter Slipper.
