Devastated AFL players have mourned Cam McCarthy as “one of the all-timers” as they prepare to take the field with heavy hearts. The former GWS Giants and Fremantle player died on Thursday aged 29. He was found unresponsive at a house, believed to belong to his parents, in Lake Coogee in Perth’s south, with police treating his death as non-suspicious. The news was confirmed on Friday just hours before many of his former teammates will play in the Dockers’ home game against Sydney.
“You’ll be missed mate,” the Essendon player said. McCarthy was drafted out of Western Australia in 2013 and played 21 games for the Giants during their formative years. Homesick and battling mental health issues, he sought a trade home to Perth at the end of 2015 but GWS opted to hold him to the remaining two years of his contract. He sat out the 2016 season and secured his move to the Dockers, playing 49 games for the club over four seasons.
