Calls for the Albanese govt to ‘take action’ against TikTok amid national security concerns

Shadow Home Affairs and Cyber Security Minister James Paterson has called for the Australian government to take action against TikTok.

This comes after the US House of Representatives passed a bill which could see the app banned if its Chinese parent company ByteDance doesn’t sell its controlling stake within six months. “TikTok is a national security threat for Australia for the same reason it’s a national security threat to the United States,” Mr Paterson told Sky News Australia.

“Number one, they abuse the data of their users and number two, they use the app to interfere in our democracy by pumping it full of disinformation and by censoring things which are critical of China’s Communist Party. “For the same reason that the highest representatives have now taken action, the Australian government must take action.
