A new citizen science project aimed at monitoring and protecting one of Australia's most revered animals will launch this week.

Platypuses were typically found across the eastern parts of Australia, in waterways and rivers situated up and down the Great Diving Range.

"They're obviously not that easy to survey, being nocturnal and can occur anywhere along a river system," he said. A recent study led by Professor Kingsford found the number of platypuses in Australia had dropped by a third in the past 200 years. He pointed to what was happening to rivers in terms of clearing vegetation along the edge, which increased erosion and filled up the platypus pools with sediment.

"We know that when platypus are probably moving between rivers they do some overland movement, but they could be vulnerable to things like foxes in particular."

Bit had to track them if there aren't any.

havn't seen platypus's in creeks around here for years, their dead they didn't generate a direct income so we exterminated them along with other wildlife we exterminated to stop competition with livestock. but hey someone got a job out of it so its all good right?
