California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in four of his state's northern counties. Firefighters reported progress against the nation's largest wildfire, the Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon, containing 46 per cent of the blaze that had consumed nearly 1,657 square kilometres.Marcus Kauffman, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Forestry, said rain and higher humidity predicted this week could provide relief for the emergency crews.
