With overseas travel off the cards and local beaches becoming our prime summer haven, cabanas are giving Australians a new way to enjoy their day on the sand.

Spectacular views of blue and white are what we all love and expect at Australian beaches – but this summer, that striking colour combination is coming from a sea of cabanas dotted along shorelines.

“You used to roll up at the beach with your family, get in and out of the water and leave or, if you had an umbrella, you’d stay until the wind came in and it blew away with sand going everywhere and your day at the beach had ended in a few hours.Luis Ascui Whitehead, who had a melanoma removed a couple of years ago, says the cabana allows him to enjoy the beach without being in the sun. The beach tent trend never appealed because her prefers the visibility and free flow of air in the cabana.

Annette Maloney – pictured with husband Peter, daughter Tess and their dog – says the family has been staying at the beach for longer since getting a cabana. While some non-cabana folk may complain about the visual or space impact, he says hasn’t encountered this. He decides where to set up the cabana based on the sun.

“The first day I used our cabana after Christmas in Sorrento, I sat in that chair and had no idea I was there for 6½ hours without moving. It’s a record for me. I was asleep for a lot of that time. I have red hair and freckles so I don’t get to enjoy the beach any other way.”
