In the wake of yet another art scandal, the former wife of artist Brett Whiteley wants buyers to “check the history of the work as best as you can'.

"It's buyer beware," Wendy said. "Check the history of the work as best as you can, and if there really is doubt, try to get involved with me or other people who know Whiteley's works, such as [Melbourne gallerist] Stuart Purves or [Sydney gallerist] Robin Gibson.", supposedly created by Whiteley in 1978, is the latest painting to have had its authenticity questioned. It was sold as a real Whiteley in 2006 for $1.

The heads of major auction houses made similar recommendations yesterday. "We always encourage collectors to looks for solid provenance and exhibition history, ideally leading all the way back to the artist," said Merryn Schriever, director of Bonhams Australia."Verification, inclusion in publications, and especially in the artist's catalogue raisonné, is an absolute essential," Schriever said.

"Buying at auction is probably your safest bet, and I'm not saying that to give auctions a plug. That's just my honest opinion," he said.

Why big banks don't care about the first-home buyer stuntThe plan, which will only affect about 10 per cent of active first-home buyers, won’t move the dial for the CBA nor any of its big banks peers. Because ... it is just that, a stunt. 🙄 Yes Bowen’s stunts a real Bewty 😂 They felt the same about the royal commission!

Spotlight on fake Indigenous Australian art amid new calls for a clampdownLaws to stamp out the trade of phony Aboriginal art manufactured in China are no closer to fruition, with neither major party fully committing to tougher legislation if it wins government on May 18. It isn't Art, it is design and so long as there is no attempt at deception regarding the origins of the object then there is nothing wrong with it, except for the tackiness of it. Idiots buy rubbish and want the lowest price. Any ideas that apply racism in legislation would fail. Still it's a good joke when the idiot tourist notices 'made in China' bwhahahahaha Are the fabrics and tea towels hand painted? I doubt it.

What the first home buyers deposit scheme means for younger voters and their budgetIt’s a last ditch attempt to woo younger voters, but will it help those struggling to break into the housing market or saddle them with too much debt? Stop building houses and polluting the earth Their political Hyde’s or trying to make offerings to the investment people ? I’d like someone to explain to me - Coalition or Labor - where that $500M liability comes from. That money comes from taxpayers. Tell me how. ‘Unlike the first home buyers grant, this is not a cash handout, the government is simply guaranteeing the loan.’
