“People have been buying not what they require, but more than they need,” Barnaby_Joyce said.

“People have been buying not what they require, but more than they need,” Mr Joyce told ABC radio on Monday morning.“Corporations and businesses who buy up more than you’d expect ... It’s like saying you’re not producing enough toilet paper because people are swiping it off the shelves, I don’t know why they do it, but they do.”

Health Minister Greg Hunt said there had been “clear cases” of hoarding rapid antigen tests, including “people that were scooping [them] up to resell at inflated prices.” Labor leader Anthony Albanese said it was “quite extraordinary” that many pensioners who went to pharmacies to access the free rapid tests the government had promised them on day one of the scheme would not be able to find one.“And what we heard from Barnaby Joyce then was blaming the Australian people for the unavailability of rapid antigen tests,” Mr Albanese said.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said every country was facing supply chain “pressures” when sourcing rapid antigen tests but that state and federal governments had more than 200 million on order.“We have, right through this pandemic, helped fund and secure tests.”
