The Age has heard reports of city-dwellers rushing supermarkets in Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey, Seymour, Woodend, Daylesford and even in towns as far away as Kerang and Deniliquin.

on Tuesday and said two buses had just arrived at the town's Woolworths." we're trying our hardest amongst the community to make sure everyone has enough. We've got a neighbourhood house where if you've got a spare roll of toilet paper you can drop it off. We've got community groups popping up.At the Romsey IGA, about 20 kilometres east of Woodend, it's been "like Christmas Eve" every day since mass cancellations began on Friday.

Kristi Gilbert, who co-runs a community Facebook page with more than 2000 members, said she had never seen anything like it in 10 years of Romsey life. She said reports from shop staff was that many people were arriving from Melbourne, but some were also coming from larger regional centres like Bendigo.

In Prahran, more than 100 elderly people lined up before dawn and almost all went straight for the empty toilet paper aisle."The three most important things - tissues, toilet paper and meat - and they are not there. I had to buy gyoza. We're not used to eating gyoza, but now we have to eat anything.

What a panic!!! Well that looks when you and Americans apply sanctions to other countries and common people suffer.

City people should be banned. Show the drivers license. If they are city people, they can’t shop. Under these crucial times, employ security staff to monitor it. That will at least keep some people employed.

Wolves are out in packs 🦍

ThisisRaysBlog Greed rules - reminds one of that film with Michael Douglas 'Wall Street'.

Thanks a lot TOWNIES that's the personalities we dislike they are probably responsible for all the litter that appears along our roadsides during the holiday months There is a divide and this is certainly not helping so city grubs. Piss Off.

Stop showing shop empty th advice good for you good for everyone

Labor government Dan Andrews appears to be doing nothing while shops are being stripped bare by his Chinese allies.

Are they Caucasian, Asian, Indians, other or a mixed bag?

They won't support any other local businesses either mind-you, total grubs.

Don’t wanna be part of this society

الكورونا ماهية الا حرب اقتصادية بيلوجية وليس ب الخطورة علي الإنسان كما يروج لها اعلام الدولة المتضررة اقتصاديا و الغبي يفهم لأن لكل داء دواء

We had people come to Geelong.

Imagine if there was a war and the factories were bombed? But hey this isn’t a war just a select selfish idiotic part of our society. Shame!

Please tell me this isn’t so - I grew up in Kerang and on farms outside Kerang- my parents shopped fortnightly if they were lucky - am so sorry for my Mallee family and friends- this is just stupid now

That's insane!

That's True... They have come up to Small Regional towns... & taken All the Food...This has got to be STOPPED from happening by the Government... Time for Rationing to be implemented...This is just utter Greed Survival at any cost to Other People... Ration cards/stamps needed now

My husband drove to work at 7am Mon & went past local Woolies. Vic border. The car park was packed already. It was pretty much cleared out of meat, bread, eggs, potatoes, flour & other essentials by lunchtime.

Australians showing their true colours. It was my fathers generation that were salt of the earth. feral selfishness

Bus loads? From the city to Deniliquin to go grocery shopping? 🤔

SouthBasinComm They've been driving a couple of hours to get to our town to do it. The staff at the supermarket don't recognise any of the faces lined up at the door for opening time.

Complete pigs.

It's happening all over Australia. Shop shelves are looking bare, people are stocking up on all sorts of groceries. It's an over the top reaction.

Do these people not work or what? I haven't got time to be road tripping all over Victoria. Or are they supposed to be 'working from home'.

Yes, the Human Locusts move from area to area very quickly! Put on those Buying Limits and enforce them!! coronavirus

Antibolt Bet everyone wishes they still delivered the Yellow Pages now

p_hannam Yep, it's pretty disgusting when locals can't get anything. My family lives out there are can't even get food for a toddler with special diet. What are these people doing buying stuff they don't even need. Just stop.

You irresponsible morons 150,000 deaths apparently Will you apologise when it doesn’t happen? Stop the panic reporting

Wodonga

Disgraceful

Absolute scumbags.....

This wont be popular, but I think this is a good thing. The more food people horde, the more they will self isolate and we may get out of this mess if we all STAY THE F INSIDE

Ahahaha that is truly fucked up

Repulsive. Publicly shame them

Who knew we could be this selfish & feral. Stand up & take a bow Australia 👍

Poor country towns. They don’t live in the city for a reason. Beautiful country folk do not need unnecessary hysteria like this. That’s just cruel. Leave them be. 💗

So wrong should be stopped

Boosting regional economies LNP-style 🙄

No excuse for people pillaging supermarkets in regional areas denying locals, including those without transport, access to basics. Would they like it they had vulnerable relatives and friends that missed out due to greed?

Wow this is out of control- never thought it would come to this but maybe people should start showing up with ID and a shopping list to present at front. Then woolies workers give you those items in rations. No one can come back twice a day once ID’

shalailah The virus is showing the real face of Australian society and it is not pretty. Seems we are a nation of gutless panic merchants who'd knock over their own grandmother for the last packet of pasta

People are listing 10 roll packs of toilet paper on Ebay for $30+

This is outrageous and not in the spirit of mateship and a fair go coronavirus

Just a though my work takes us on a weekend getawsy every year. We hire a bus and we shop at the local supermarkets to buy our food etc while there putting money into the communities. Bus loads of people travel throughout Vic for shopping tours, pokie getaways and shop too.

This is getting beyond silly. I have enough food in my kitchen for two more days. Tried to get some today and nothing. Absolutely nothing!!

p_hannam And all the way down to the Latrobe Valley

shalailah Horsham has been hit too and St Arnaud!

p_hannam This is loathesome. 😑

Grubs

What is wrong with these people. Just awful.

So who's organising the buses?... close them down!

Like a human plague

Things in politics that implicitly sanction such behaviour: 1/ Hoarding water rights for profit; 2/ Rorting government grant schemes; 3/ Rewarding donors over voters; 3/ Election pork barrelling; 4/ the “both sides” argument; 5/ ? auspol

and in their selfishness, potentially spreading the virus

The press needs to help with factual reports about keeping cool. We have the infrastructure to survive this. Our society is as strong as our spirit, you need to get onboard and start reassuring the public. Otherwise, on the other side of this people will know the culprit becalm

Bring in food stamps now

Not to mention Lockington, Echuca, Elmore and Rochester. These arseholes need to realise that we have people in our rural towns that need our supermarkets. Don’t be so selfish.

Tell it as it is, bus loads of Asians! The ones that started all this! They just keep on giving.

WHEN is This Government Going to DO Something!

Just in from my parents in Echuca.

I hope all regional supermarkets start asking for ID with an address on it and only sell to locals or their carers. Bloody disgraceful behaviour. shoppingraiders COVID19au

People living in these towns are stuck due to this. Really disgraceful.

Unbelievable........?

It's called selfishness. Plenty of that out there.

Qldaah ScottyTheSalesMan People need frank fearless leadership, not hollow platitudes. “Keep calm”, “Be Australian”, and “She’ll be right” when a minimum of 50K Australians are about to die given the COVIDー19 modeling you, yourself, presented is outright criminal. (Reply2/2) auspol

Time to restrict the number of people hoarding. Introduce the old surname method. Assign days to shop based on the first letter of your last name. Sure ScMo could work up a policy!

Hey if you could slightly soften your newspapers, and print them on smaller perforated paper you’ve just solved two problems. This is a 100% serious idea

My own country supermarket wasn't too bad. No TP or pasta but they had meat and frozen veg and some canned goods. Time for the DanielAndrewsMP and the Vic govt to get off their arse and pass some laws banning stockpiling, profiteering and activities like the one described.

Qldaah So what is ScottyTheSalesMan doing to quell this display of public panic? Some frank and fearless leadership is needed but he seems incapable of anything. Saying “we’ve got a plan” I then outlining nothing just reads you’ve got no plan. Reply 1/2 auspol coronavirus COVIDー19

Yep and Leongatha recieved a visit. There are going to be some problems happening soon.. the townsfolk do NOT appreciate this happening. Stand by. After such event happening THEN the authorities will make a statement “to quiet everything down”. Not before of course.

The government needs to bring in a law on scalping. Will stop people hoarding more than they need.

it's time to lock down all supermarkets for 3 days then reopen with extremely limitations. Can only shop within your post code. Only open Coles & Woolworths alternative days. If people are going to be hysterical then it's time to be dictatorial.

Happened in Mansfield from all accounts yesterday and unfortunately will continue to happen while people are stupidly hoarding. Many of our local elderly are struggling to get what they need.

And in Phillip Island (holiday house owners and day trippers) according to my local relatives

The Chinese city slickers

Appalling

Did anyone check if these city folk were buying groceries for elderly parents/relatives who live in the country? As that is what I’ll probably be doing soon, given my parents are in their 80s, have health issues, live in the country & must drive to get to a supermarket.

Not seen this in Daylesford but I’m not at Coles 24/7, only when dunny/Murdoch paper required

and now Horsham! You need to take responsibility and report that panic buying is not necessary! Think of your own families when you write these ridiculous articles

Wangaratta

Like this story.

Marathon shoppers, not such thing as shop till you drop!

Flogs like that make it hard for everyone!

Respect and consideration for one another has gone. It's like War of the Worlds out there!

Just can’t get enough of the empty supermarket shelf photos, they just keep the panic right down. Well done The Age.

Keep the panic going the age.

Deplorable!

Yep it's happening witnessed it on Sunday in Echuca. Bloody disgraceful.

They got a flat on the way back.... and had to walk back...🚌

FakeNews

If any of those people are reading this (which assumes they’re smart enough) you are complete and utter bottom-feeding shitstains and I hope the karma bus is on its way for you.

Disgusting.

I apologise for my dumb panic buying neighbours.

-C

I'm in Gisborne and quite frankly I think that's probably not accurate. It's busy in Gisborne for sure - however I think a lot of it is locals not city-dwellers.

Pathetic behaviour

Just when you think people can't sink any lower😓

Shelves might be bare, but here's why Australia isn't running out of foodEmpty supermarket shelves have become a common sight in the past few weeks — but retail, agricultural and economic experts are urging everyone to calm the farm. Their comments about it being silly were confusing though. Weren’t we told to have 2 weeks of food in case people are self isolating? ask yourself this, do plants or cattle or pigs or fish stop growing and producing cause there is a human virus? The manufacturing of food in Australia isn't broken - the common sense of people is.

Elderly and disabled to get dedicated shopping hours at Woolworths, online delivery suspendedWoolworths stores will begin a dedicated hour for vulnerable members of the community on Tuesday, as the supermarket suspends its home delivery service due to 'extraordinary' demand Good Doesn't that put a lot of high risk folks in one place at the same time? What about those who cannot get to the supermarket because of disability? Perhaps Woolworths can add an online shopping option only for those who cannot go to the supermarket in person due to disability. Unfortunately that will mean policing these requests. Meat stripped from supermarket shelves amid coronavirus panicMeat has become the latest casualty of Australia’s coronavirus panic buying, with chicken, lamb and beef becoming sought-after products much like toilet paper. Why tho? Aren’t these perishable ? If we didn't export most of it to feed those overseas, we might not have to take these steps. Food security for all Australians must be a priority for the Govt. ScottMorrisonMP auspol AlboMP PaulineHansonOz Journos loving this, no need to research and work for stories. Can just walk into a shop and report empty shelves.
