The Owen family are at their wit’s end trying to have a Sydney builder resolve dozens of defects on their property. Now the builder is under investigation.

Sydney home builder ANSA Homes is under investigation by the NSW Building Commission over complaints by customers who allege the company has left their homes with “serious and significant” defects, and beset by delays and broken promises.

More than two years ago, Amanda and David Owen engaged ANSA Homes for their $800,000 knock-down and rebuild. In March, the family moved into their Baulkham Hills home which they say was infested with black mould, had a tarp over part of the roof and failed waterproofing without certifications. They had been due to move in last August.“We have building materials in the shape of a house. We are completely f---ed. Our $800,000 house is not worth $1,” Mr Owen said.

Mark Maloney denied he had misled clients. Accepting build times “have been longer than expected”, Maloney indicated these delays were endemic to the industry, rather than afflicting just his firm. Affected home owners received an email from a senior building inspector at the Building Commission on May 10.“Building Commission NSW has begun an investigation into ANSA Homes Pty Ltd,” the email said. “The investigation will be concentrating on the quality of work in existing dwellings and those currently under construction, as well as collecting evidence of unprofessional conduct.”

Fair Trading contacted one client and asked for an interview on Thursday. Building Commissioner David Chandler was contacted for comment.
