NSW Building Commissioner David Chandler may have announced his impending retirement but says dodgy apartment developers might want to leave their celebratory champagnes on ice until they fully appreciate
Last November, when 400 inspectors were transferred from Fair Trading to the Building Commission, and $24 million was tipped into the organisation, he boasted of their prowess in identifying and dealing with dodgy developers. His achievements are many and great. Against all odds, he has reinstated insurance against defects for the first 10 years of a building’s life.under which developers subject themselves to rigorous analysis of their current work practices and past performance, in the hope of attaining three stars or better., whereby owners in apartment blocks that were still under warranty could apply for expert advice and support in getting their defects fixed.
If he has failed in any area, in the public’s eyes, it would be his Building and Design Practitioners’ Act.It requires renovations in existing buildings costing over $5000 to be approved by certified professionals, and has been criticised forHowever, all said and done, Chandler has been a colossus in the apartment building industry and his clear aim for his last three months in office is to make sure the industry goes forwards, not backwards, when he takes his well-earned rest in August.
