McAvaney has called his last AFL game.Channel Seven announced that the doyen of sports broadcasting would not be part of the network’s commentary team for the 2021 season after making the difficult decision to take a step back after four and a half decades in the business.
The 67-year-old will continue to lead Channel Seven’s horse racing coverage, and will be behind the microphone for the Tokyo Olympics in July and August, assuming the Games go ahead. He said he was not pondering full-on retirement.

I was BruceMcAvaney's publicist at 7Sport for a year in the last millenium. What a pro, what a gentleman. I saw his famous preparation & his generosity to all. From boardroom execs to kids at the tennis they all wanted a moment. He defined a profession and he's not done yet.
Hmmmm Suddenly out of the blue just like that? I feel there's more to it. Breakdown in contractual agreements I'd say.... It happens all too often..

I hope he’s genuinely retired and it’s not a recurrence of a health problem. Bruce is a genuinely nice guy, his knowledge of sport is fantastic and calling sport was what he wanted to do. One of the best commentators on Olympic sports, knew everything, worked really hard.
Going by that new 50 mtr penalty rule looks like he’s pulled the pin at the right time. Who would want to be involved in that fucking circus they call afl. notbruce

Well the 2021 season just got a lot better
A few years overdue probably. But would have left a huge hole if he left as well. Would love to see Jason Bennett get a gig. Less past players doing commentary and more actual sports callers. Commentary is at an all time low..
