UK rock legend Steve Harley has died, aged 73, following a battle with cancer. Harley was the frontman for glam rock group, Cockney Rebel, which had been touring until recently, but they had cancelled dates due to Harley’s illness. The group’s best known song was Make Me Smile, which was a number one hit in 1973. London-born Harley died on March 17, with his family saying on Sunday he passed away peacefully at home, with them adding he will be “desperately missed by people all over the world.
The success of the single was largely credited for its barbed lyrics and catchy chorus, with it topping the United Kingdom’s singles charts following its release. It went on to be covered scores of times and was used on countless soundtracks, including in the 1997 film The Full Monty and in ads for Carlsberg beer and department store, Marks and Spencer.
