Analysis: New Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan has managed to neutralise two of the organisation's most vocal critics with two appointments in just seven weeks

New Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan has managed to neutralise two of the organisation's most vocal critics with two appointments in just seven weeks.

Gaines and Kearns are well qualified for their roles but both appointments have shrewd political angles.Kearns represents the rugby establishment. His decision to front a campaign to remove the RA executive and board in April – a rare act of aggression from someone who has traditionally maintained neutrality in public – was significant and controversial.

His choice of Kearns, a decorated Wallaby with extensive contacts and a prominent public profile, is not only a savvy choice for what will be a high-profile and political bid process. It is also a clear gesture designed to bring a former critic into the tent. And a redemption of sorts for Kearns, whose image was tarnished by his involvement in the campaign to remove Castle.

"The way you develop trust in an organisation is delivering on what you say you're going to do and Hamish [McLennan] and Rugby Australia over the past six or eight weeks have talked about giving back to the grassroots and the grassroots will support you if you deliver to them.Stuart Walmsley/Rugby.com.au

Gaines was a surprise inclusion on the advisory board in rugby terms. But her position at the helm of Forrest's flagship business, Fortescue Metals Group, is another sharp political appointment from McLennan.
