Brilliant Barty ends 44-year drought with Open triumph | scottspits

World No.1 Ashleigh Barty has finally put to bed one of the biggest droughts in Australian sport, a 44-year wait for a new home-grown Australian Open singles champion, defeating American Danielle Collins in an absorbing women’s final.

After match point, an overjoyed Barty let out a roar and looked to her trusted team in the stands. Close friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua, working courtside for Channel Nine, soon got a hug. At 30-15, and with Collins just two points shy of officially levelling the match, a terrific Barty forehand winner put all the pressure back on her opponent.

The 6-3 first set didn’t precisely follow the template set by Barty across six rounds, but it was close. At this rate, Barty was on track to at least go close to matching her average of 61 minutes per match.

scottspits What a fantastic champion. Humble, gracious, a true role model for young athletes. 3 slams already makes her the greatest since Evonne. Long may her run continue.

scottspits Barty shows Australians something many dearly need to learn: effort and perseverance are the ways to find whatever success you want, not cutting corners, bitching a moaning.

scottspits Amazing, love it and loved Aunty Evonne

scottspits Who can claim, ever, to have climbed back, to win in the same “set”, from 1:5 down? Ash Barty is the real deal.😎

scottspits Legend 🔥🔥🔥👊😎

This country needs to celebrate Ash like they do male sportspeople! Incredible! And didn’t that poised win stick it up that annoying Pommie ‘commentator’ ? Channel 9: get rid of her, she’s a nobody and a pain in the butt. But what a win and what a credit to tennis, Ash Barty! What a match. What a champion. An Australian winning an Australian open.
