The out-of-home advertising industry is booming with more than 130,000 assets across the country, with calls for greater regulation of LCD billboards.

Sydney’s outdoor advertising is out of control, critics warn, with thousands of digital billboards installed on footpaths, delivery bikes and in train stations as the out-of-home advertising industry booms.

Australasian Dark Sky Alliance NSW founder Marnie Ogg said the proliferation of digital billboards was like “death by a thousand cuts” and that more regulation was needed. “We comply with all state and federal regulations and work with authorities and the community to alleviate concern in relation to new digital signage and brightness,” she said.

Net media revenue for the out-of-home advertising industry climbed by nearly 10 per cent in the latest quarter, according to the OMA, bringing in $287.6 million. The spokesperson also said revenue from third-party markets helped the department function, with cash reinvested back into the transport networks to improve services.
