Their romance moved quickly, and Ms Wilkinson travelled to Ohio, where Johnston was born and raised, to meet him in person for the first time in December that year. The pair eventually got back together and went on to have their third child, but within four years Ms Wilkinson wanted to get away from him again.In February of 2021, just after Ms Wilkinson lost her mother, she confided in her three sisters that Johnston was abusive and controlling and she wanted to separate.One month later, allegations emerged that Johnston had previously sexually assaulted Ms Wilkinson.
At the time, he was given strict bail conditions and was told not to contact Ms Wilkinson unless it related to their children. Later, that same friend then allegedly drove Johnston to Ms Wilkinson's house again, this time filling up a 20-litre jerry can of fuel along the way.In the early hours of April 20, 2021, Johnston, dressed in all-black and wearing a mask, was dropped off in the cul-de-sac of the Gold Coast home he had previously shared with his family.
The case was due to go to trial this month, but he pleaded guilty in February, in what appeared to be a last-minute admission.
