A trial over an 11 year-old's crime spree has revealed troubling aspects of his home life and lack of school attendance.
A Kununurra magistrate found the boy, who cannot be named, guilty of the offences after Monday's proceedings focused on whether he knew what he did was wrong, a requirement for offenders aged 10 to 14. He was involved in the theft of alcohol from a local bottle shop and helped hide it in rubbish bins to avoid detection.
The boy's lawyer, Leanne Wykes, questioned how he could develop a sense of right and wrong in that environment. Mr Roberts ultimately agreed with the arguments put forward by police prosecutor Sergeant Lucinda Boon who drew heavily on his previous offending, which also involved stealing, and his sense of contrition at juvenile justice team meetings.
