Former aviation students, who claimed the Box Hill course was not good enough to result in a commercial pilot’s licence, have won $33 million in a landmark class action settlement in the Supreme Court. | nikkprecel

Box Hill Institute has agreed to pay $33 million to more than 500 former aviation students in a landmark Supreme Court settlement.

were temporarily banned from training students in 2019 after the CASA found Soar was not adequately supporting students’ needs or meeting the requirements of the training package. Their authority to train students was restored in April 2020., students argued written coursework didn’t contain content that met minimum CASA standards, their exams were set to a low standard, and that there was no system to monitor their progress.

“To have achieved such a positive outcome is a credit to the hard work of everyone involved. I’m glad this matter is now behind us all,” she said. The settlement includes more than $4.6 million in legal costs, $49,000 for a special referee and $15,000 for legal costs for Soar’s liquidator. The balance of the payout will be paid to members of the class action, some of whom spent $100,000 for a course they won’t get a qualification for.
