Boris Johnson, who likened his Brexit strategy to the Incredible Hulk on the weekend, has been dubbed the Incredible Sulk after skipping a press conference because of noisy protesters.
Bettel, who had attended the lunch with Johnson and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, used the occasion to lambast Johnson over his threat of a no-deal Brexit, saying he “can’t hold the future hostage for party political gain”.“We need written proposals and the time is ticking so stop speaking and act,” he said.
In anodyne official statements after the meeting – a lunch featuring pan-cooked chicken oysters, butter-roasted pollock and iced marshmallow for dessert – neither side had any progress to announce. A Downing St spokesperson said the meeting, also attended by Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, had been “constructive” and the leaders had agreed to “intensify” discussions in coming weeks.
