Officers who would usually screen international cargo and mail were reassigned by the Australian Border Force to help address queues at the nation’s airports.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, ABF has lost up to 20 per cent of its workforce at airports due to attrition, promotions and a reduction in new recruit numbers undertaking training throughout FY2020-21,” state the briefs, dated June 2022. During the pandemic, airport-based officers were able to be reassigned to screen cargo and mail, but that could not continue once more passenger flights were scheduled.under Freedom of Information laws, revealed the ABF expected to remain under “significant pressure”.“With the reopening of international borders, passenger clearance times have increased due to additional health related checks.
