Police have achieved an astonishing breakthrough in the hunt for one of Sydney’s most prolific sex offenders, known for years as “The Bondi Beast”, bringing a decades-long cold case to a close.
“His family had no idea and really were beyond shocked when we had to tell them,” Johns said. “There are so many questions that are unanswered. And a lot of them have come from the victims themselves.”For 16 years, women in Sydney’s eastern suburbs lived in fear of a sex attacker dubbed “The Centennial Park Rapist”, “The Tracksuit Rapist” and “The Bondi Beast”, and for decades police were hunting several men.
“And then on the other hand, there were the women who were out and about doing their normal daily activities; jogging, walking, exercising, and all of a sudden have been grabbed by this man from behind, dragged into some bushes or a secluded area and sexually assaulted”.The brazen nature of the crimes and the level of offending across several suburbs including Randwick, Coogee, Tamarama and Pagewood had sickened even the most hardened police officers.
But the case went cold again until 2016 when a random search of the police DNA database uncovered a familial match to the samples provided by victims. By this stage, the investigation had expanded to 31 attacks; 12 were connected by DNA and 19 by modus operandi.Detective Sergeant Dan Walker from the police DNA management unit said this was the moment the investigation accelerated.
Detectives then applied old-fashioned detective work in a process of elimination, focussing on the age and location of the relevant family members, which ultimately led them to Keith Simms on September 3 this year. Jennifer was 33 and working as a community liaison nurse when a stranger entered her staff accommodation at the Prince of Wales Hospital via a balcony door in the early hours of the morning and violently assaulted her. The balaclava-clad man held a knife to her throat and told Jennifer he was there to rape her.The despicable act left an indelible mark on Jennifer, who has undergone years of trauma counselling to help deal with debilitating flashbacks.
