The government of Bolivia has averted an apparent attempt at a military coup, by the former general of its armed forces. Dramatic footage showed soldiers storming the presidential palace in La Paz, leading to angry demonstrations.

An armoured vehicle twice rammed the gate of the presidential palace, forcing it open and allowing soldiers to stream inside. As Bolivians were called to the streets to support their president, the rebel troops eventually backed down.He then addressed supporters who'd filled the square, which had earlier been occupied by soldiers.
