Waverley Council has been forced to revise its upgrade of a coastal walk after residents complained it would let tourists look into their bedrooms.

The future of one of Sydney’s most scenic walks is under a cloud after a bungled upgrade left residents claiming tourists would be able to see into their bedrooms.

A council spokeswoman said in a statement the council had commissioned reports to assess the safety of the boardwalk as well as the views of residents, privacy, risk and maintaining public access following previous serious accidents and fatalities.Tony Beuk, Vaucluse Waters resident Waverley Liberal councillor Will Nemesh said the council had been building parts of the new boardwalk more than two metres above the pre-existing coastal path. He said plans exhibited in 2021 did not show the higher boardwalk. The elevated sections are predominantly in front of the Harry Seidler-designed Vaucluse Waters residential building at Diamond Bay, prompting an outcry from residents who discovered contractors working on the walkway had a bird’s-eye view into their bedrooms.

Last November, the council opted to lower the height of the boardwalk at Diamond Bay and remove a lookout to address concerns about privacy, noise and visual impact at an estimated additional cost of $500,000.“By removing a safe vantage point for photo opportunities, visitors may attempt to find access to those same vantage points, re-exposing them to extreme risk scenarios,” a report said.
