Akaysha Energy, a battery storage start-up backed by US giant BlackRock, has beaten some of the biggest names in Australia’s energy sector to win the rights to build and own the Waratah Super Battery in NSW.Batteries are critical for Australia’s energy transition amid concerns about firmed capacity.
It gives Akasyha the right to build and own the battery, which would start life backed by a near-five year contract from NSW’s EnergyCo. The Waratah contract is expected to be worth about $1 billion. Akaysha’s understood to have been talking to banks about a funding package.
