Despite being born in Ballarat, fighter pilot Roy Goon was denied entry to Australia's armed forces because he wasn't 'substantially European'. On the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day, his son reflects on an extraordinary life.

With a family history in Australia dating back to the 1840s, Roy Goon felt slighted when he was rejected by the Royal Australian Air Force because he wasn't "substantially European".His military career began in China, fighting for Chiang Kai-shek's forces as a pilot against the Japanese"My Dad used to say it was a bit of an insult, really," son Chris Goon said.

He told the minister he was considering moving his family to Hong Kong so he could join the British war effort from there. "I feel very proud to think that he stood up, and he stood his ground to make sure he could do his bit for the war," Chris Goon said.
