Nuclear reactors, if they are built, will be in the backyards of farmers such as Darren Jensen. He's thrilled by the prospect, but not everyone in town is.

Darren Jensen can stand on his back deck and see, across his fertile cropping land, the Callide power station. The second-generation cropping farmer has been on the land his whole life.

Hanging over the family's head is the likelihood that part of their beloved property could be soon resumed to accommodate transmission lines for a renewable energy farm."Maybe they can stop some of these renewable projects, maybe there is a future here for our kids." Like many others, he believes turning the Tarong Power Station into a nuclear facility will help the town to thrive."It's all safe these days," Mr Birthisel says.Like many in the debate who have a vested interest in securing the future of regional centres, Mr Birthisel says nuclear would mean more employment for the local community."I think it's just where we have to head, coal is going to run out soon and nuclear is safe," he says.

Nationals leader David Littleproud says the party's nuclear policy will not live or die on the consent of local host communities. The federal opposition has proposed Port Augusta could host one of the nuclear power plants it plans to build if elected, but the announcement has drawn mixed opinions from the community."Peter Dutton and David Littleproud, as part of a Coalition government, are prepared to make the tough decisions in the national interest," Mr Littleproud said this week.

The seat of Flynn, covering 133,000 square kilometres, extends west from Gladstone and Gayndah and includes Mount Morgan, Monto, and Biloela and contains a mix of mining and agriculture.Melissa Sturt, who has lived in Biloela for 23 years, says she wants a better explanation about how the reactor will affect the community."I don't really know much about nuclear, but it sounds a bit scary.
