After consulting his family and colleagues, Michael Daley has confirmed he will not contest the NSW Labor leadership when a ballot is held following the federal election. MORE: speers

It has been revealed Bill Shorten pressured NSW Labor leader Michael Daley to stand aside, amid concerns his anti-Asian immigration comments would cost the federal party votes in key Sydney seats.

Mr Daley on Monday evening said he would stand aside until after the federal election, with deputy leader Penny Sharpe to fill in as interim leader. To do otherwise would be 'an unnecessary distraction' from the task of trying to elect a Bill Shorten federal government, he said in a statement.
