Labor leader Bill Shorten has defended his plan for major changes to the tax system, which the government says amounts to a $387 billion slug on Australians over a decade.

On the first full day of campaigning ahead of the May 18 election, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg released costings which he said showed Labor wanted to 'stifle aspiration' and damage the economy.

Mr Shorten, who campaigned in Sydney, said there were clear economic and social benefits to Labor's plan to overhaul negative gearing and capital gains tax and wind back franking credit refunds. Image: News Corp Australia

Labor is NOT talking about tax ‘reform’. They are talking purely about a tax grab. The nation is in dire need of serious tax reform, but there are no Hawkes, Keatings, Howards or Costellos smart enough or brave enough to take up the challenge in today’s parliament.

Good, that is money that could used fo a much better purpose.

Governments is lying.

The rich pay tax, the poor get food

This outrageous Shorten tax plan must be sent into a black hole and never see daylight again! How dare Shorten and Bowen think they can rob and steal more taxes just to feather their own self importance ! LiberalAus

The gov says bullshit. Treasury does not cost opposition policies

Keep it going bill .... 😭 more taxes yay ...... not!😡

You defend your tax plan and I'll defend my tax avoiding because I'm sick of government stealing from me through crooked laws and regulations.

Yep, he isn't called Bill for nothing.

Tax us to death it’s the Labor way

Yes there's a handful of very nervous boomers who hate the thought of contributing.

Fake numbers based on a 10 year projection and taking as fact PROPOSED LNP legislation that won’t even take effect until 2024. Do better SkyNews fakenews

Bill shorten is going to send us all broke with his policies he is just a puppet for the faceless men

$387,000,000,000

Forget Scott Morrison's scare campaign - this year, you have a choice between Labor and a Fair Go for Australia and more of the Liberals' cuts, chaos, and confusion. Australians!! On 18th of May 2019 Vote 1 Labor .

The government is lying and sky knows it but still wants to use $387 number anyway, liberal re-election propaganda channel

Gobshite .

This government is so desperate. They were saying 200 billion last week. This week they’ve tacked on another 187 billion. Why don’t they just say a gazillion trillion and be done with it....

Did you get asked at your mates daughters wedding to keep Australia in debt for his countries benefit little Bill?

Defends it by not telling anyone the cost to them. laborlies

Pity treasury doesn’t.

And what CHANGES are they ? For goodness sake get it right for a change. Read your replies and see what people want not what they are disgusted with.

At least they brought those all tax policies forward not like coalition have gotten any instead of slogans

If only it was true! AUSVote2019

The doubling of debt whilst slashing services shows how much this failed government knows about running the economy. Royal Commission would be a good idea auspol

everyone knows you are pro liberal. What annoys mris you actually think people are to dumb too make there own minds up.

I love news that says Treasury released a total when the Treasury specifically said it didn't release a total. Very cool Sky!

He’s got to get it through the senate , Greens needed to do that and he has to say yes to adani for the sake of the cfmmeu in QLD No $387 billion in taxes no promises kept Unless he borrows it of course which may explain the wedding invitation cantTrustLabor

Where is the thumbs down twitter.

Half that much will be needed to repay the debt racked up in the last 5.5 yrs Does ScottMorrisonMP think LiberalAus are gonna pay it? They’ve got no money AusPol

COMMUNIST! This is going to kill the energy that got this Country going!

Treasury says it didn't cost Labor's policy because the request from the Treasurer did not reference the 'opposition' per se. (The policies submitted for costing just happened to be eerily similar) auspol

The item the media does not ask labor what will debt be at the end of 3 years with the extra tax revenue.

Yeah pinky bill is telling the truth.

Kodswallop

Again, you're peddling garbage - Phil Gaejtens, the secretary of Treasury, has stated publicly that they DIDN'T cost the policies - this is just an IPA lie campaign. STOP PEDDLING LIES
