It's been revealed a third of reported cane toads in NSW are misidentified and are in fact native — and even endangered — frogs.

"For the average person, it can be quite difficult to distinguish between cane toads and frogs," Mr Jackson said. The spread of cane toads beyond the state's Far North Coast, where the pest has been established in endemic populations for years, has prompted cane toad and native frog workshops across the state.

Hunter Local Land Service community engagement officer Eva Twarkowski urged those who discovered a suspected cane toad to safely catch it and report it to either the DPI or LLS.
