Mining giant BHP has conceded it submitted an application to destroy Aboriginal heritage sites at its $5 billion South Flank iron ore project in the Pilbara, despite opposition from local traditional owners. It was prompted by Rio Tinto's decision to blast ancient rock sheltersThe WA Government granted approval to destroy dozens of sites just days after Rio Tinto destroyed 46,000-year-old rock shelters at Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara.
BHP's David Bunting said the concerns were first raised when mine planners, heritage staff and traditional owners were in the field discussing the potential heritage impacts ahead of the company's application. BHP's head of indigenous engagement Libby Ferrari said the company would have "possibly" done things differently with the benefit of hindsight.
It said there were no rights of appeal for traditional owners to Section 18 consent granted by the WA Government under the Aboriginal Heritage Act.
No!

Weird. The world was appalled at the destruction of archeological sites perpetuated by ISIS. Spot the difference. terroristswearsuitstoo RioTinto
So much for a democratic country. Where is the people’s voice? Where is the rights of the people of the First Nation ? Haven’t we taken enough already? When is enough enough? Nobody seems to be listening? Mockery! Who are the savages? Mine away there will be nothing left soon..
Fucking dogs
wombat_punch We don't deserve this country. We should all go back to where we came from.Maybe clean up our mess first, and say sorry and leave. Nothing we do is not exploitative and greedy and cruel.
Its pathetic.
This is a f.cking joke
😠😡
It's actions that count, not words. And we've had decades of actions and pointless apologies and promises to do better. 'He said it would take a 'fair amount of work' to rebuild faith and trust with traditional owners in WA.'And gas is just the new coal. More excuses to come.
teamswiftparrot FFS
I am absolutely livid that the gvt and mining companies are good with destroying heritage sites. WTF is wrong with people? There's plenty of ore to be taken from land that isnt culturally significant. FFS. These places should be respected. Once they go, they are gone forever.
Wtf
Mining in WA is the epitome of the GameOfMates. As straight as a dog's hind leg. We rightly condemned the Taliban for blowing up historical artefacts. These sites are far more significant. This can't go unpunished. BLM
Yep. The ACMC meets monthly to consider applications under s.18 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act. Miners, developers, government departments, landholders all line up for permits to impact sites. It happens 11 times a year and has done foe decades.
Mining company executives and lobbyists need to publicly. They are filth and less than human. As are their political acolytes.
This fucking country. I swear to god...
Who honestly cares about a few caves where a few people sat around in eating wallaby 30,000 years ago. I mean, it’s no Petra is it?
BHP and other companies ought to use advice of anthropologists and indigenous groups rather than governments on how to proceed. Destruction of such important world human heritage cannot be approved, cannot be permitted. bhp smh UNESCO
One step forward 1000 backwards..
Amazing BHP ! Show us the $$$$$
ENOUGH!!! Let's destroy everything so 8 people can continue to be filthy rich.........
This is total bullshit federal government betrayal again under ScottMorrisonMP watch WTF
Why is BHP even asking for permission to destroy Aboriginal Heritage sites? What is this? And who is the fool that believes they have that authority to authorise the destruction. They don't, no one has.
You would have to be joking
WTF
Criminal BHP
Lol
BHP are well known criminals.
TimDoherty_ Keeping 10 out of 40 safe:-(.
Old news: they had gotten approval, but after Rio’s conduct they decided not to go ahead.
“The WA Government granted approval to destroy dozens of sites just days after Rio Tinto destroyed 46,000-year-old rock shelters at Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara.”
How Insensitive
No. Just no way. How can they? This is disgraceful .
What!
Criminals
BHP Stop this immediately
Absolute ABC hatchet job yet again. Nothing in this area gets approved unless the indigenous elders approve.
They are not very bright, are they?
Leave the caves alone. There is plenty of dirt to dig elsewhere.
Just disgraceful....!
WTAF?!!! no seriously, I'm asking WTAF who in their right F'ng mind lets this sh*t go on!?
Not surprised!
