A group of brush-tailed bettongs sent from an island off the SA coast is flourishing.

A group of brush-tailed bettongs sent from a South Australian island to re-populate the Yorke Peninsula is thriving, ecologists say.Of the 40 animals released, only two have diedThe critically endangered marsupial was once abundant on the mainland but has been extinct for more than a century, ever since feral cats and foxes were introduced to the area.

Ecologist Derek Sandow says there is plenty of digging activity from the bettongs which will help disperse seeds. Chloe Frick, an ecologist says the recently released bettongs are thriving in Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park. The south-west forests of WA are the only place on mainland Australia where bettongs have survived among predators said Mr Sandow.
