ANALYSIS: Berejiklian shrugs off hollow challenge, but there may be trouble on the horizon

— less than 12 hours after it was announced.

"On that basis, I have called the Premier this morning and advised her that we will withdraw the spill motion to continue negotiations prior to the debate commencing in the upper house later today." Those around Ms Berejiklian say she doesn't like confrontation and attempts to be an inclusive leader. But by doing so, she's rewarded bad behaviour. And each time they've upped the stakes, effectively holding the Government to ransom. After all, it would take only two lower house MPs defecting to the crossbench for Ms Berejiklian to lose her majority. The Premier's leadership was never under threat from a spill this time around — the numbers simply weren't there, they weren't even close.

Pushing too hard and cutting corners is an act of incompetence rather than wisdom. The Premier has been embarrassed several times in Public Work projects that had no proper planning and in legislation rushed without consultation.
