Comment: History shows Berejiklian has the upper hand in calling Barilaro's bluff

John Barilaro has been a maverick leader of the Nationals. He has increasingly attacked his so-called Liberal allies. He has repeatedly threatened to use the ultimate weapon and blow up the government.

Nationals leader John Barilaro is flying in the face of history in his stoush with Premier Gladys Berejiklian. In the Eden-Monaro byelection, many believe Barilaro deliberately sabotaged the Liberal candidate to provide an opportunity for himself to go federal and displace the low-profile Nationals Leader Michael McCormack.

Long-running leader of the Country Party, Sir Michael Bruxner, came to realise that only by going into coalition could concessions be won for country people, and their representatives. It proved to be an extremely successful formula that Barilaro is now jeopardising.
